Alderpoint Depot

Alderpoint, east of Garberville. The depot is located on a small bluff above the main stem of the Eel River.



Alton depot, at the corner of Highways 101 and 36. Across Highway 36 was the Alton & Pacific Railroad, a privately owned tourist attraction. It no longer exists.

Bert Rudolph recorded this rare view of the main track side of Alton depot about 1955. Crews stopped here to register their trains on and off the Carlotta Branch. The Pacific Lumber Company had a mill in Carlotta.



The Arcata depot was located on E Street between 9th and 10th.



Dunsmuir. Huh? And when did Dunsmuir move to the Eel River Valley? Well, it didn't, but it's such a pretty depot we had to include it here.



The Eureka depot.



The Fernbridge (Fern Bridge) structure still exists and is used as a warehouse. The Humboldt Creamery Association, first established in 1906 is directly across the street and was a shipper when the railroad was in operation. Just past Fernbridge was a summer resort called Grieg's Landing, and the trains would stop there on request.

The Alton & Pacific Railroad was a privately owned tourist attraction located on Highway 36 in nearby Alton. It no longer exists.


Heralded the "City of Fortuna", this steam locomotive, originally the Hammond Lumber Company Number 16, was once located near the entrance in Rohner Park. It is now being operated as an excursion train in Washington.

For many years the Pacific Lumber Company used the railroad to move their lumber from the mills to shipping areas. They operated passenger trains as well. Here are some recent pictures of their railroad operations.


Three trainmen were killed in January 1953 at the Scotia Bluff when a landslide took their locomotive, the NWP184, into the icy Eel River. (Bill Bish pictures)
