Scanner Audio Streams and
Frequency Database for
Humboldt, Mendocino, and Trinity Counties
on California's North Coast.

Technical information for this radio is here.

The URI for this scanner is being listed on some scanner location web sites.

The good news: that's what the Internet is all about.
The bad news: the server runs out of upstream bandwidth after ten streams (check current stream count).
The worse news: listeners are finding a full server when they wish to hear the scanner audio.

This has been resolved by limiting the session length.
Connections will terminate after one hour of streaming.
Simply start the stream back up with a new request.

Sorry about that.

Technical Information

This radio scanner is located near the Rohnerville Airport in Fortuna, at approximately 200 feet of elevation. Meridian Hill is directly to the east but the locale provides line of sight to all of Fortuna and most of the Eel River delta. It has excellent reception of all North Coast mountaintop repeaters. The antenna is a vertical VHF collinear, about ten feet long, mounted at the top of a short mast.

The scanner monitors about 70 local channels at 20 channels per second. The analog audio is fed into a computer sound card input. The computer processes the audio and converts it to the various requested formats. The digitized bits are then wrapped into packets which are served up using a SHOUTcast server. Each listener gets an individual 24 kbps (kilobit per second) stream. Overhead and switching adds a bit more. 300 kbps of upstream bandwidth allows the server to send up to ten streams at once.

The processing adds a 30-second delay. By hustling to your computer after the fire siren sounds, you will still be able to hear the original dispatch!
